Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Greg Keene was inspired to build a centre of excellence for the treatment and care of sport injuries, and approached fellow Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Roger Paterson, along with Sports Physiotherapist Susan Everett to join him in establishing SPORTSMED·SA. Other sports medicine professionals perceived to be the best in their fields were recruited for their skills, ambition and commitment to the vision.

By the end of 1987, the founding principals started to regularly meet to establish the framework for the new clinic. They were Orthopaedic Surgeons Dr Greg Keene, Dr Roger Paterson and Dr Michael Hayes, Doctors with a special interest in sports medicine including Dr Peter Barnes, Dr Mark Fisher, Dr Geoff Graham and Dr Malcolm Grant, and Physiotherapists John Camens, Shylie Davidson, Glenn Dods and Susan Everett.
These practitioners were responsible for overseeing design and construction of the building, developing contractual and financial structures and implementing a marketing and business plan for the clinic.
This plan was radical in that it promoted equality among teams and a system promoting personal incentive in order to create an organisation that could maintain sustainable growth and high standards.
On Monday, 22nd May 1989, the clinic opened its doors at Stepney to the first patients. This was followed by the opening of Australia’s first freestanding day surgery in 1990.
In August 1998, a 45-bed inpatient hospital for overnight patients was built at the Stepney site. It was the first purpose-built orthopaedic facility in Australia to expedite recovery from joint surgery, while it was the first hospital in the state to provide patients with guaranteed private rooms featuring ensuite bathrooms.
In a bid to provide patients with access to local and convenient specialist services closer to home, a second location was opened at Morphett Vale in 1999. This was followed by Darwin, Blackwood and Henley Beach over the next five years.
In 2008, the hospital underwent a $4.5 million expansion, which included a new fully-equipped theatre, increase in bed numbers by 40% in the first-stage recovery area and a 60% increase in chairs in second-stage recovery.
Regional orthopaedic surgeon consulting branches in Mt Gambier and Victor Harbor were opened in early 2015.
A major expansion of our Stepney site broke ground in December 2016 to transform the location into an innovative and high-quality healthcare hub that offers patients a one-stop location for all their healthcare needs.
With new facilities and services, the Stepney Healthcare Hub opened to the public in August 2017. Full Circle Hand Therapy, Clinpath, Dr Jones & Partners, TerryWhite Chemmart and Three Sons Espresso joined the hospital and existing suite of services at Stepney.
After almost 30 years in existence, SPORTSMED·SA was rebranded ‘sportsmed’. The iconic bandaids logo remains the same, however we removed the ‘·SA’ component of our name to reflect that our brand is represented in the Northern Territory, Victoria and New South Wales along with South Australia.
A solar panel system the size of 266kw was installed. 5 months later we had saved over 72,000kg of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of planting 2,150 trees. The solar panels currently generate 50% of our own usage.
