Pelvic Floor Muscles

The pelvic floor muscles are a hammock like structure from the pubic bone to the tail bone. They help support organs in the pelvis. These organs in women are the bladder, uterus and the bowels. The urethra, vagina and anus pass through the pelvic floor muscles.

The pelvic floor muscles help control your bladder and bowel movements, urge to void and sexual function. Therefore it is important to have a strong and coordinated pelvic floor.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Training

Women, younger and older, need to use their pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor muscles may weaken over time due to:

  • Pregnancy
  • Child birth
  • Constipation
  • Heavy lifting
  • Chronic cough/sneezing
  • Aging
  • Being overweight
Like other muscles in the body, the pelvic floor can be trained to become stronger through exercise and weight training.
